Things That Go Crack In The Night

About 3:30 this morning I broke a piece out of my tooth. It was a molar and I have no idea how it happened. Of course it feels HUGE. R looked at it when he got up with his trusty LED flashlight. He said it wasn't that bad, but I have a space between where my teeth used to meet up. It doesn't go all the way to the gum, but it goes pretty high up.

I have really strong teeth. I brush and floss religiously, and even use my waterpik sometimes, so I am not sure what happened. When I get up I am going to call the dentist. It's a tad sore, but it doesn't seem to be sensitive to hot or cold so the nerve isn't exposed which is good. I am not sure what the dentist does for that. But I am hoping he can do something. It has me a bit freaked out.

In the mean time if any of you have any information on what they do, it would probably set my mind at ease a bit. I have one crown and I don't relish the thought of another one. I can't stand the one I have. I have issues with anything fake being part of my body.

I had something else I had planned on posting about this morning, but I guess it will keep til my little crisis is over.

Eeek! I wish you luck... the closest I've ever come to that is, when I was losing my baby molars, they all did something called 'erupting' which is break apart from the center. Very annoying!

I'm sure you'll be fine though, he'll probably just make sure your nerve isn't at risk of being exposed and then send you on your way (How's that for hopeful optimism?)

Hello... How strange to wake up to this blog post as I just got the exact same phone call from my Mum yesterday.

Sounds like you might have actually lost a piece of a filling as apposed to actually breaking a tooth. Fillings have a life span just like everything else. It may have had a small crack which allowed bacteria to enter.

Not being able to actually see the tooth it is hard to diagnose your options but they might just be able to clean out the old filling and any new decay and replace the filling. They may need to add small pins in the tooth to help support a big filling or ... a root canal with the dreaded crown that you are not looking forward to if the nerve is indeed dying.

Another option depending on how far back that tooth is to have it removed (not usually my suggested choice but if the tooth is the last tooth farthest back it might not be used such as a wisdom). Most likely they will take an xray also.

I have your phobia too... foreign things in my body is an issue for me. Just try to know that this is medicine and it will help you. Bring a nice calm meditation or soothing music with you to the dentist (I Pod or walkman) if you can. I find that really helps me a lot. All in all it does not sound major and you are doing all the right things by visiting your dentist right away.

Good luck and try not to worry.

Thanks guys! I am going in two hours to the dentist. The only thing Michele is that tooth doesn't have a filling. The place that broke doesn't go all the way to the nerve because it's not sensitive to hot and cold.

I will let you know what they do when I get back.
